Sigma Brushes Review

Hey everyone,

I figured I'd add to all of the Sigma reviews out there, just in case anyone is interested. I'm obviously only going to review my first order from them, as I haven't received my second yet, but once I do and test them out I'll review them also.

The first order I made, I purchased the original brush kit Sigma came out with called "Complete Brush Kit with Roll" $99, I also bought the original Kabuki brush.

First of all, let me just say that I placed the order sometime last year, I suppose roughly a year ago but I can't be sure on the exact date, but I know it was before June 2010.

So, I placed my order, I got my confirmation e-mail and I waited. I figured it may take a while, considering Sigma is located in the US and I'm in the UK. I was wrong. Within a week or so I got my order. I wish I'd taken photos at the time however I'm sure we've all seen just how beautifully packed each Sigma order is. It was all neatly wrapped in the brush roll and placed in a gorgeous red bag. Each brush individually had their own wrapping, albeit being in the roll already, keeping all of the bristles in place.

When I took them out of the roll, I have to admit I did smell something a tad odd. I couldn't quite pinpoint what it was but I figured it was just from being in their warehouse or whatever. No problem, when I washed them the smell was gone. The second thing I did was feel them. I wanted to see if they really were soft. Prior to buying Sigma brushes the only ones I had were from the ELF original £1.50 line. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE my ELF brushes. Especially the regular eyeshadow brush for packing on colour. I love them so much I have anywhere from 5-10 of them. Their blending brush however is extremely scratchy and doesn't do the job well. Moving on. The Sigma brushes are unbelievably soft, they were the softest I'd ever felt. Now granted, I've never had a MAC brush or felt how soft they are - but I don't care. These are unbelievably soft. You can barely feel them - which is what I like.

The eye brushes I have to admit, are my favourite. I use them all the time for every look I create. Packing on colour, blending, my outer > area, under my lower lash line and in my tear duct area. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about them and I strongly suggest everyone buys them.

As for the face brushes, I love a few and dislike a few. I don't like the Concealer brush (F70), it could be that I was using it wrong at the time being quite new to makeup, but it didn't do what I wanted it to do. I still have it, I just don't use it. The Foundation brush (F60) I dislike also. I used it, did what I saw in all of the Pixiwoo YouTube videos and still didn't see the results. It left my face looking streaky and it was absolutely horrible. However, I have read about another way to try and use it so I plan on trying this other method to see if that helps. I'll keep you updated. The Duo Fibre brush (F15) I was very excited about, due to the fact that so many YouTube gurus and people in the blogging beauty community swore by applying foundation with it. That didn't work for me either. Similar to the foundation brush, it left marks all over my face. I tried to blend it, swirl it, stipple it, you name it and it just didn't work out for me. I have heard it can be good for cream blush, but as I don't have any thus far I can't testify to that. However when I do and try it, I'll update on that also.

The other face brushes I received from Sigma I love. My powder brush (F30), contour brush (F05), the brush I use for blush (F40) and my buffing kabuki brush (F45) are amazing. I've had no issues with any of them at all.

Do they shed? Yes, a couple of them shed when first washed, and a couple have shed while applying product to the face however after a couple washes, they were fine. There wasn't any more shedding, no bleeding of the dye etc.

Do they last? Yes. I've had mine for over a year and they're all in fabulous condition. Of course, any brush will be so long as you take care of it.

Are they worth the money? Yes. For the price, these are absolutely worth the money. They're a great alternative to those of us unable to pay for more expensive brushes.

Who are they for? Everyone. Whether you're new to make-up or a professional I think everyone is able to use these brushes. Plus, if you are new to make-up and don't know how to use each one, Sigma sends a brochure to tell you what each brush is for.

From what I have tried, I recommend the following brushes:

Eyes:

E05 - Eyeliner
E25 - Blending
E30 - Pencil
E40 - Tapered Blending
E55 - Eye shadow
E65 - Small angle (eyeliner/brows)
E70 - Medium Angled Shading

Face:

F05 - Small Contour
F30 - Large Powder
F40 - Large Angled Contour
F45 - Buffer/Kabuki

Like I said before, I've just made my second purchase with Sigma as of 30mins ago. I ordered the F80, E20, E50 and a second E40. I'll do a first impressions post when I receive them and a more in depth review once I've washed and tested them for a little while.

I haven't posted my own photos as I wasn't sure if you'd like photos to see how mine have perhaps held up over the past year? Like I said before I don't have photos of when I first received it so I didn't know what to do. If you would like photos of mine, please feel free to ask and I'll take some and add them into this post.

I hope someone found this review to be somewhat helpful. If you have any questions please feel free to ask me.

You can purchase all of the above mentioned items on the Sigma website.

Do you own any Sigma brushes? What is your opinion?

  3. Great review. ITA that they're a great bang for the buck. I wish I had known about them before collecting all 30 of my MAC brushes... *sigh* One of my top used daily brushes at the moment is the F80.

  4. Thank you! Yeah, I'm not interested in trying the MAC brushes now I've got Sigma. I may eventually one day, but for right now I'm more than happy with them. Can't wait for my F80 to arrive.
